Prompt a Small Survival Game Without Feature Sprawl

Survival is a broad theme, so a useful prompt narrows it to a single pressure. Decide what resource is scarce, what threat approaches and what the player can do about it. A small loop where collecting, spending and avoiding danger connect is easier to evaluate than a sprawling crafting list with no urgent choice.

Write the prompt around a playable rule

The prompt gives the player three readable actions and a known deadline. Each option should have a cost and a consequence, so players can compare immediate safety with the chance of rescue. Keep the resource list short and display what an action will consume. A first run should make the approaching storm visible instead of surprising the player with a hidden timer.

Original concept prompt: “Create a short island survival game on one screen. Each turn, choose to gather driftwood, repair a shelter or signal a passing boat. A storm arrives after six turns; shelter reduces damage and a signal can end the run successfully. Show the storm countdown, supplies and outcome of each choice before confirming it.” This is a recipe for an idea, not a claim that this exact game is already playable.

Play, observe and refine one thing at a time

Try two different strategies: gather several times, then repair early and signal later. Check whether the result follows the shown costs and countdown. If one action dominates every run, adjust its cost or give another option a clear benefit. If players cannot plan, reveal the storm schedule or explain the effect of shelter before they spend a turn.

Add only one new survival pressure after the original choice loop works. A tide that blocks gathering could create timing decisions, while a crafting tree may add bookkeeping without improving the immediate tension. Record which turn felt meaningful and which felt automatic; revise the automatic choice so it carries a cost, risk or useful trade-off.

Do not simulate every survival detail in the first version. Hunger, temperature, durability and wildlife can bury the central decision. Keep one or two resources, one threat and a clear ending. If players survive by repeating the same safe move, change the consequence structure before adding more inventory items.

Playable reference for this prompt: Tide Trail. A paper boat drifts on its own through a canal network; tap junction switches in real time to route it past rocks, lock gates, whirlpools, tides, ferries and lightning to the lighthouse, collecting shells for stars across an 18-level journey map. Use this example to compare the proposed rules with a game you can try now.

Questions about survival game prompt

How do I make survival choices understandable?

Expose the countdown and the cost of each action. Players should see the tradeoff between gathering supplies, strengthening shelter and spending a turn on a signal.

What should a failed run teach?

Show which resource or unmet condition caused the failure. A useful result screen lets players connect their earlier choices to the storm outcome.
