Confirm the game works without a network before you travel

“Runs in a browser” and “works offline” describe different things. A game may load from a website without an install and still need a network for its files, sign-in, ads, scores, or live opponents. Offline use requires the game to make the needed code and assets available locally and to define what features stop working when disconnected. Check those details before a commute, flight, or unreliable connection instead of assuming the page will keep running.

Ask what must keep working

Separate the features you need: opening the game, starting a fresh round, saving local progress, syncing a score, or joining other players. A single-player puzzle might remain playable after its files are cached while leaderboards and cloud saves do not. Ask the publisher which functions are offline-capable and whether you need to launch the game once while connected before travelling.

A home-screen shortcut is not proof of offline support. MDN notes that many installable progressive web apps use service workers for offline behavior, but installability itself does not require a service worker. The game must cache its actual resources and provide a fallback for any request that cannot reach the server.

Verify the setup before leaving Wi-Fi

Open the game online, follow its official offline instructions, then switch the device to airplane mode and fully close and reopen it. Test a new round, an interrupted round, and any save you care about. If a browser says “you are offline,” note whether that means the game can continue or only that the shell page is cached. Reconnect afterward and check whether the game reconciles local progress as expected.

For a downloadable alternative, inspect the official listing or help page for the specific title and confirm “offline” applies to the mode you plan to play. Google Play documents a small set of built-in games available offline; that is a safer lead than assuming any installed app works without a network.

Keep a fallback plan

Download the approved game on a trusted connection, verify storage space and first-run setup, and carry a non-digital option if access is essential. If the game depends on live servers, no browser setting can make that mode available offline.

Questions about offline browser games

Does adding a browser game to the home screen make it offline?

No. A shortcut changes how you open a site; offline behavior depends on the game's caching and fallback implementation. Test by closing it and reopening with the device disconnected.

Can a game work offline but lose some features?

Yes. A cached solo mode might work while login, cloud saves, leaderboards, ads, or multiplayer do not. Check each feature separately and verify the developer's stated behavior.
